Panattoni opts for ProfiNRG solution (with cable-pooling) to bypass grid congestion at new Kerkrade business complex
Due to rapidly increasing grid congestion in the Netherlands, more and more companies are facing long waiting times for a new electricity connection. For the new Panattoni Park Kerkrade however, this challenge has been successfully solved thanks to an innovative energy infrastructure designed and realised by ProfiNRG, in cooperation with Censo.
The new business complex - good for about 36.000 m² - will be fully electric and meet the highest sustainability standards. As no new connection capacity was available in the region, ProfiNRG developed a solution using a shared grid connection through cable-pooling: temporary sharing of unused grid capacity of neighbouring company The LYCRA Company.
This shared connection is combined with a large-scale energy system consisting of:
- 1 MW / 2 MWh battery storage
- 1.2 MWp solar roof
- Smart energy control for peak smoothing and maximum use of own solar energy
This integrated approach ensures that Panattoni is completely energy secure, without depending on grid expansion. The battery captures consumption peaks and enables the use of as much locally generated solar energy as possible, while cable-pooling optimises available capacity.
Rapid realisation, maintaining capacity
Cooperation partner Censo supervised the contract formation and energy arrangements. A key advantage of cable-pooling is the speed and simplicity with which it can be set up. Whereas energy hubs are organisationally complex and often take years to set up, cable-pooling can be arranged within a very short time - without any approval procedure from the grid operator.
In addition, each party retains its own contracted assets, ensuring Panattoni's future expansion plans.
A boost for the region
Panattoni Park Kerkrade is strategically located on the N300 with direct connections to the A76, A2 and German motorways. The proximity of multimodal terminals towards the German hinterland makes the location ideally suited for logistics and distribution. With millions of consumers within short travelling distance, the region also offers strong economic growth prospects.
Innovation accelerating the energy transition
The solution realised for this project shows that companies can grow and become more sustainable despite grid congestion. By bypassing infrastructural limitations with smart, market-oriented energy solutions, ProfiNRG is actively contributing to accelerating the energy transition in the Netherlands.
