Almost a quarter of the renewable energy in the Netherlands comes from solar power

In 2025, more energy was consumed from renewable sources, such as wind, solar and biomass, than in the previous year. This is according to new figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS). In total, 22.7 per cent of the Netherlands’ energy consumption came from renewable sources. Of that renewable energy, 23 per cent was generated by solar power.

Solar energy production increased due to a combination of extra hours of sunshine and the continued expansion of solar panels in the Netherlands. As a result, the amount of solar energy generated rose by almost 19 per cent compared with the previous year.

Although wind energy and biomass remain important sources of energy, the share of solar energy continues to rise. At 34 per cent, biomass is still the largest source of renewable energy. The growth in wind energy remained relatively limited, as fewer new wind turbines were installed last year.

According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), the Netherlands has made significant progress in the area of sustainability in recent years. Since 2019, the share of renewable energy has risen by 127 per cent. This makes the Netherlands one of the fastest-growing countries in the European Union.
