Trianel awards ProfiNRG an EPC contract for an 80 MW battery storage project in Waltrop
ProfiNRG has been awarded the turnkey EPC contract for the construction of a battery energy storage system by T-BESS 1, a battery storage project company set up by the municipal energy company consortium Trianel, in Waltrop, Germany.
The project is located in Waltrop, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and comprises a battery energy storage system with a capacity of 180 MWh on the DC side and 160 MWh at the grid connection point, including all associated balance-of-plant installations. The project forms part of the Trianel Battery Park Waltrop (TBW), a large-scale battery storage project being implemented in several phases. Upon completion, the facility is expected to have a capacity of approximately 900 MW installed capacity and at least 1,800 MWh of storage capacity.
The EPC contract and a long-term service agreement for T-BESS 1 were signed on 24 July 2026 signed. The formal instruction to commence work (Notice to Proceed, NTP) was issued on 1 September 2026 provided. The commercial commissioning of the grid connection is scheduled for third quarter of 2028.
The project site is situated in a complex infrastructure area where extra high-voltage connections, railway lines and underground pipelines converge. This places high demands on both the design and the execution of the project. ProfiNRG is responsible for the full EPC scope and is utilising its expertise in battery energy storage systems (BESS) and medium- and high-voltage installations to effectively manage the technical complexity and the various interfaces within the project.
ProfiNRG is working with its strategic partner to supply the battery storage system BYD Energy Storage. This involves the use of the latest generation MC Cube BESS solutions. BYD Energy Storage is one of the world’s leading providers of integrated energy solutions and now has more than 135 GWh supplied to energy storage systems, spread across more than 650 projects in over 110 countries and regions. In 2025 alone, the company supplied more than 60 GWh in battery energy storage systems, making it the world’s largest supplier in this market.
“We greatly appreciate the trust that Trianel has placed in ProfiNRG,” says Amanda Zhu, Senior Business Development Manager for Battery Energy Storage at ProfiNRG. “Together with our strategic partner BYD Energy Storage, we look forward to delivering a high-quality, future-proof battery storage facility and building a long-term partnership with Trianel.”
