Civil & Site Interface Engineer - BESS Projects

Due to our growth ambitions, we are looking for a civil & site interface engineer who takes ownership of civil works and site preparation, ensuring projects are delivered smoothly and ready for commissioning in close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.

The job

In this role you are responsible for the design and construction of all civil structures, as well as preparing the site for the execution of electrical works. You oversee the physical layout and implementation of all structural components of BESS sites (10-80 MWp), ensuring that heavy electrical equipment is properly positioned and connected. You are responsible for delivering the site to the Commissioning team, who will energize the BESS installation. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team consisting of a Project Manager, Electrical Engineer, and SCADA Engineer.

Projects are primarily located in the Netherlands, but may also take place internationally, including in Germany, Denmark, Scandinavia, the UK, and France.

Key Responsibilities & Tasks

• Site Layout & Design (ACAD): Creating and managing detailed General Arrangement (GA) drawings. You determine the optimal placement of BESS containers, transformers, cable layout and switchgear using AutoCAD.
• Heavy Lifting & Logistics: Designing and supervising temporary construction roads and crane pads. You plan the logistics for hoisting and positioning heavy assets like 40ft BESS containers and multi-tonne transformers.
• Foundations & Structural: Designing and calculating specialised foundations for transformers (including oil containment bunds) and battery racks, ensuring they meet load-bearing and vibration requirements.
• Cable Infrastructure: Designing and supervising the excavation of cable trenches, ducting systems, and manholes. You ensure correct bending radii and thermal spacing for HV/MV cabling.
• Electrical Interface: Coordinating the termination and connection of electrical cables. While not performing the E-work yourself, you ensure the civil infrastructure (entry points, glands, cable trays) perfectly matches the electrical requirements.
• Subcontractor Management: Contracting and leading civil subcontractors and specialised transport/lifting companies. You review their Method Statements and Risk Assessments (RAMS).
• Quality Assurance: Able to make specifications and asses or performance and quality of work is up to the required performance. Make (acceptance) reports from works for project manager and client.

Who are you

You are a hands-on communicator with a minimum of a bachelor's degree in a technical field, capable of effectively leading civil subcontractors and on-site digging crews while maintaining clear alignment with key stakeholders such as the Client, Project Manager, and Site Manager.

And furthermore

• Experience: 3-5 years of relevant working experience, with proven track record in foundations and civil works for (large-scale) plants, including subcontracting and quality assessment of civil works.
• Logistics: Experience with heavy lift plans and oversized cargo transport.
• Standards: Knowledge of Dutch, German, and Scandinavian regulations related to civil works, including permits, norms, soil protection (e.g. oil containment), and cable burial depths.
• International work: Willingness to work on project sites abroad (1 or 2 times per month, including Germany, Denmark, Scandinavia, the UK, and France.

Specific Technical Skills

• Engineering: experience and knowledge of foundation and structural design. The engineering itself will be outsourced, but able to check the results and make specification for all structural elements of a BESS site.
• Software: Advanced AutoCAD skills are a must for creating site layouts and cross-sections.
• E-Technical Affinity: Strong feeling for electrical engineering. You understand the spatial and safety requirements of MV/HV equipment (clearances, earthing grids, cooling airflows).
• Execution Knowledge: Practical experience with earthworks, soil compaction, and the installation of precast or cast-in-situ concrete structures and selection and coordination of subcontractors.
