Blokland Cold Stores has already taken many 'green' measures over the years, but now wanted to take a bigger step. Thanks to green financing, the roof could be filled with solar panels. "Our cold store is like a battery. When the sun shines, the refrigeration runs at full speed with the help of the solar panels and we generate even more energy, which we can put back into the products. It works even when it's cloudy." The investment by Blokland Cold Stores saves ten per cent of electricity annually, which equates to 250 households. Together with the structural engineer, we built a new steel structure on the roof here because the existing structure could not support the solar panels.
